Interventional Pain Physician and Anesthesiologist Julie Huang-Lionnet, MD
Dr. Julie H. Huang-Lionnet is a Harvard and Hopkins-trained Board-Certified Anesthesiologist specializing in Interventional Pain Management with certifications in Regenerative, Cosmetic, and Venous Medicine.
Dr. Huang-Lionnet was awarded the W.L. Moody, Jr. and Louis J. Walsh Engineering scholarships during her undergraduate studies, earning her B.A. in Biochemistry and Cellular Biology and B.A. in Biological Sciences with minor in Bioengineering and Computer Science from Rice University, summa cum laude. She was recipient of the National Institute of Health (NIH) M.D., Ph.D. Scientist Training Grant at the David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California in Los Angeles, where she earned her M.D. with Distinction.
She spent a few years performing basic science and translational research in targeted kinase drug discovery for variety of cancers with collaborations at Stanford, MIT-Broad Institute, and UC San Francisco. She also obtained her MBA with honors through the Medical Leadership program at UCLA Anderson School of Management, where she discovered her entrepreneurial spirit and has since received small business grant funding and numerous venture competition awards for medical device development in collaboration with UCLA Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology (CASIT).
Dr. Huang-Lionnet completed her Anesthesiology Residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital within their clinical research track. During her time at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Huang-Lionnet served as a medical officer at the FDA in drug, device, and biologics regulatory review, with the aim to understand how to bring healthcare advances to the patient’s bedside. She completed her Pain Management Fellowship at Harvard Medical School – Brigham and Women’s Hospital while also serving as Chair of the Fellows and Residents Section Committee (RSC) for the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA).
Committed to patient care, Dr. Huang-Lionnet’s clinical interests encompass a wide range of pain conditions. Some of her specialties include spine-related pain, musculoskeletal disorders, degenerative joint diseases, neuropathic pain, regenerative medicine, chronic migraines or headaches, and post-surgical pain. She believes in providing comprehensive care for her patients with a multidisciplinary approach. Integral to her practice is the pursuit of cutting edge pain treatments, including minimally-invasive fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided interventions, spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation, regenerative medicine, and intrathecal therapies.
During her term as Assistant Professor at New York Presbyterian Hospital—Weill Cornell Medicine, she helped establish and grow their Pain Management Center’s Downtown location and taught fellows in the Weill Cornell Tri-Institutional Fellowship Program in conjunction with Hospital for Special Surgery and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Prior to her current practice, Dr. Huang-Lionnet led development of both the Regenerative Medicine and Cancer Pain Management Programs at the Sackler Pain Management Center at Greenwich Hospital— Yale New Haven Health into a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive pain center. She has continued her societal leadership involvement on both national and international levels. Dr. Huang-Lionnet has served as Director-at-Large for the Board of Directors (first female pain physician to serve on the NANS Board) and Chair of the Women in Neuromodulation (WIN) Executive Committee for NANS. She also served as Co-Chair of the Neural Engineering Neuromodec and NANS Diversity and Accessibility Committee. She currently serves as Associate Faculty for ASRA.
Dr. Huang-Lionnet has clinical and research interests in neuromodulation, regenerative medicine, minimally invasive spine, biologics, targeted drug development, sports medicine, and venous disease. She continues to be heavily involved in clinical trials and basic science research for drug discovery and technology development. She currently serves as Editor for NANS and Reviewer for Pain Medicine. Dr. Huang-Lionnet has published numerous articles in nationally recognized journals and has also been invited to present at numerous national and international conferences.
